Speaker Configuration

The three front speakers: left, centre and right must be identical, the same brand, specs and model. This is exactly what the originator of surround sound, Dolby, states quite clearly on their website: www.dolby.com. Lucas Film, the originator of the "finest" surround

sound tracks in the world, who use Dolby as the basic building block of THX®, support this statement on their website: www.thx.com. The best movies have the best story lines and the best dialogue, therefore all 3 front speakers must be placed in the vertical position. This provides voice matching speech intelligibility to create a 3-dimensional illusion so that the sound appears to come from the lips. A common form of centre-channel speaker is the mis-matched horizontal style lying on top of your TV set. Many retailers love selling this style as it looks pretty and makes for an easy sale. They are also reluctant to break up "pairs" of speakers. This is wrong!

Sound Pressure Meter: for the right calibration.

The "surround sound" or rear channel speakers are for the envelopment effect only. In a properly calibrated system, most times you can't even tell when they are on. However, if they are too loud, as many retailers play them, they will distract from the TV and main speakers. The portion of your brain that controls your heartbeat and breathing while sleeping also controls your survival instinct. If you hear a loud noise from behind, you involuntarily turn your head, possibly missing visual clues, thus rapidly losing interest in your movie.

Although I am not a big fan of subwoofers for home audio systems, I highly recommend them for Home Theatre. The subwoofer adds "punch" and excitement to the non-musical dimensions of movies as with the "Indiana Jones" body punches. There is a myth that comes with the purchase of most subwoofers...that they are non-directional and can be placed anywhere in the room. The science of room acoustics, resonance and standing waves says otherwise. It is crucial that we deliver and place your subwoofer in the best possible position.
